Practice Issues PTA 1500: Term Project
PTA 1500 has been a very informative course on many of the important aspects of becoming a physical therapist assisstant. There was one assignment that has used much of what we have learned in this class and we were able to present what we have learned.
For the final project we were assigned to create a Physical Therapy Department using material that we had learned in class. I wanted to post this in my portfolio because I felt that it was my way to show my effort in the class as a whole. Even after reading the required material for the class along with the lecture notes aligned with different portions of the project I felt overwhelmed. Creating a clinic by myself? I didn't think that I would be able to complete this let alone present enough material that linked back to previous chapters and sections of the class. One thing that I have always felt that I have been at a disadvantage is that I do not have any prior experience working in a physical therapy clinic. I found out about this career by happenstance and I decided to work towards getting ready for the PTA program.
What I came to realize however, after beginning on the project was that I didn't need to have experience in the field. Everything that I have read about in this class supplemented the project. In the project on of the requirments was to create specific job descriptions for each personnel within the department. This was easier said than done. This took rereading the State Practice Act, chapters from our course textbook on leadership and job responsibilites to formulate what I thought were the most crucial and important traits and responsibilities of my "made up physical therapy clinic".
I might not have experience in a physical theapy clinic, but I have worked in different clinics and capacities within the health care industry. I think that the reason I have choosen this term project to post is that I gave me the opportunity to see past my self and my own biases when it comes to my position within the clinic or lab or hopefully one day a physical therapy clinic. I find that many people become complacent with their responsibilities. If they feel the people above them are not doing things how they would, then they tend to judge... and judge harshly. This project has opened my eyes to see that there is so much that goes into running a smooth operating company or department. Planning must be done to account for any adverse situation. I learned so much from this project and I appriciate the time I put into this to complete. I feel that it taught me to trust in myself, to trust in my work and that the effort I put towards completing my tasks if worth something.
