This semester we had the opportunity to have a couple of women from Utah Family Voices come to our class to discuss with us their unique family situations in regard to their children being diagnosed with progressive disease that will leave their children with severe deficits in functional, cognitive and behavioral abilities (those that are still living). It was quite impactful for me. To think of all that each of their families had gone through and are still going through and to see how strong they were for their families and also as advocates for change was truly inspiring. They talked to us about their hardships not only in caring for their loved ones, but learning how to work with in a health care system that is continuing to work against them. They shared with us the goal of Utah Family Voices and how they work to help families learn about all the help that is available when they may think they have exhausted all of their outlets for assistance. Many families with children with functional limitations or disabilities lose out on participating in activities. They don't know what is available for them and their loved ones.
One of the assignments we were assigned was to research different organizations and present to our classmates the services they offer and how members of the community may be able to participate in and receive help from. My group was assigned the VA Medical Center. attached is my reflection of this assignment and how our agency helps to be a benefit to families like Utah Family Voices.
